Volunteers unite for weekend-long drywall derby at Sunrise Park

Volunteers unite for weekend-long drywall derby at Sunrise Park

Soon-to-be homeowner Jasmin Fuentes was tired and dirty… but very proud.

Appearing like a ghost out of the second floor window of her Sunrise Park home she is building in partnership with Habitat, dry wall dust covering her from head to toe except for a narrow mask on her safety goggles, she announce for all to hear that her crew had just finished hanging Sheet Rock in the stairwell and had “only one wall left in the bedroom!”

Jasmin was enjoying a bit of friendly competition among the 120 community volunteers who rallied for the Sunrise Park Drywall Derby held from February 8th to the 10th. During the blitz-style event, 12 crews at a time competed to see which ones could finish one floor of their house fastest and most accurately.

Building on momentum from Blitz Build volunteers who framed the final six homes at Sunrise in just three days in October and the many others who have worked steadily in the interim, Sunrise Park buzzed with activity during the derby.  Volunteers and Partner Families joined forces to install over 500 sheets of drywall, keeping construction on pace for Jasmin’s family and five others to move in mid spring.

We’d like to thank the groups who volunteered during the three day event: ACAC, CrossFit Charlottesville, Habitat at UVa, Northrop Grumman, Youth United, UVa Women’s Rowing, UVa Student Planners Association, UVa Women’s Varsity Field Hockey and the UVa Trigon Engineering Society, as well as individuals who helped recruit and lead crews: Barb Rosen, Ethan “Georgia” Howell, Ehren Siebert, Ken Rothwell, Megan Burke, Michael Hastings, Mike Kavanaugh, Sam Carannante, Cody and Sarah!

Nearing completion of the final six Partner Family homes at Sunrise Park brings Habitat one step closer to achieving our Project 20 goal, which is our commitment to scale up and build at least 20 homes annually in response to the affordable housing crisis in our area.  Click here to donate to Project 20.  An anonymous donor has generously agreed to match all gifts to Project 20, meaning that your gift will help more families like Jasmin’s achieve success faster.
