Green building, green design, green homes, green principles ... What is all the talk about green and why does it matter?

You're invited to "Green Matters", a series of free workshops at the Habitat Store to learn about the benefits and methods of living "green" and making our homes and communities more earth-friendly!

The seventh workshop of our GreenMatters series will be held on Wednesday, February 20th at the Habitat Store. We will have refreshments/social hour (generously provided by Martin Horn Inc.) from 5-6pm, seminar from 6-7:30pm, and networking from 7:30-8pm.

Titled "Smart Landscaping," this workshop will provide a comprehensive look at site selection, orientation, and development; xeriscaping (a water-conservative approach to landscaping); pest and weed management; and more.  Learn to view your landscape holistically and gain a better understanding of how you can tread lightly while still enjoying your surroundings.  Speakers are Hunter McCardle and Eugene Ryang with McKee Carson and Virginia Rockwell with The Gentle Gardener.

Visit GreenMatters or call the Store at (434) 293-6331 for more information. Download the Green Matters Informational Poster (PDF)

This is the first music program at Capdau Middle School, located in the Gentilly neighborhood in New Orleans. The students had just gotten the instruments at this class. They never had anything to play before, just some mouthpieces. The area where this school is had at least 4 feet of water in the neighborhood. In some places, it was much deeper.

One of our volunteers from the week-long Thanksgiving trip is back in the news! Local musician/photographer Jenn Rhubright is asking musicians and supporters for help. She is collecting donated instruments and musical gear to take back to New Orleans.
Over two thousand dollars worth of musical gear have already been collected to give to The Tipitinas Foundation. By their departure date in late April, Jenn and friends hope to have even more. The group will be staying at Camp Hope and working on the Musicians' Village for the week. If anyone is interested in financial donations (to help finance gas, food, water) or musical equipment, here is the contact info:
