Construction Volunteer Opportunities
For individuals interested in a one-time Habitat project, volunteering occasionally, fulfilling community service requirements or wanting to learn a new skill, Habitat welcomes you to the job site! Don’t have construction experience? Don’t worry, we welcome volunteers of all skill levels to the jobsite. Our patient and knowledgeable crew leaders will train you to perform the task of the day.
We build Tuesday-Saturday and simply ask that you work the full day’s shift (8:45-3:30pm on winter hours, and 7:45-2:30pm on summer hours) along with bringing a flexible attitude, willing to participate in the day’s task. Whether framing, hanging drywall, painting, siding, performing finish work, site cleanup or landscaping, every task contributes to getting our Partner Families into simple, decent affordable housing.
Habitat also is always in need of skilled and semi-skilled volunteers. If you have experience as a professional or are especially handy, please don’t be shy about letting us know! We will do our best to plan a task that allows you to put your time and skills to good use.
Ready to start now? The easiest way to volunteer on the construction site is to use our online registration system or click the "Volunteer Now" button. Here you will see a calendar of events and can sign up for any day(s) that suits your schedule. Then, you will automatically receive a confirmation email with additional details such as the exact location, what to bring, what to wear, etc. and can show up directly at the construction site on your scheduled day and the crew will be there to greet you and get you plugged in to a project.
16-17 Year Olds
Youth between the age 16-17 are permitted to work on the construction site with certain insurance restrictions and prior notification. Therefore, please notify the Volunteer Manager the Tuesday before the Saturday build day, or before you sign up online, if a 16-17 year old volunteer would like to build. This will help the construction team plan for a productive Saturday build day, and engage the minor in a task that allows Habitat to both upload the liability restrictions and make them feel a part of the overall team. For any volunteer under the age of 18, Habitat’s Youth United program and family-friendly activities offer abundant opportunities for volunteers of all ages to make a difference.
We are happy to help you fulfill your community service requirement. Prior to your build shift, Habitat Volunteer manager must know why you are seeking community service hours. Plus, you are responsible for having a community service hours tracking form signed by a staff member at the end of each day. For information about requirements and scheduling procedures, please contact the Volunteer Manager.

As a chapter of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville, Women Build (WB) is dedicated to combating the local affordable housing crisis through sponsoring and building simple, decent, healthy and affordable homes in partnership with low-income families. Engaging women in the building process provides a unique opportunity for women to learn construction skills and build leadership and teamwork. The Women Build program invites women (and men) to join with them in building the homes for families they are sponsoring.
